The Corner Bookstore

The Corner Bookstore became an instant mecca for a book-hungry Carnegie Hill when it opened in 1978. Located in a landmark neighborhood in New York City, we have been satisfying the literary desires of this residential neighborhood for over three decades. We take enormous pride in our stock, and carefully select current fiction and nonfiction titles to bring only the best of the best to our customers. Our commitment to carrying “only the best of the best” extends to all sections of the store including history, biography, travel, cook books, parenting, poetry, mysteries, and art.

Because of the young families attracted to Carnegie Hill by the many private schools located here, we take great care in selecting our children’s books. Titles begin with the youngest touch-and-feel books shelved in a book nook that feels like a child’s space. They continue through an extensive selection, arranged by reading level, up to and including young–adult books. In addition to devoting a large portion of the store to children’s books, we offer special store charge accounts for children, which they love. (Being able to say, “Please put this on my account” makes them feel very grownup.) We also invite neighborhood children to review publishers’ advance copies of novels for ages 8 to 13. Their reviews are published in the fall and spring issues of The Corner Bookstore’s Kids Newsletter, by Kids, for Kids. Over 50 children participate in this popular project.

Whether you are interested in children’s books or adult books, our dedicated and knowledgeable staff of bookstore professionals is on hand to answer your questions or offer suggestions as needed. We can order any current title that is not in stock and have it in a day or two, and we also search for elusive out-of-print titles. Inquiries and orders can also be handled by phone without the frustration of automated systems and menus. Gift wrapping is complimentary and telephone, email, and internet orders are shipped immediately. In person or by phone, our service is always personal. Many out-of-town customers, who discovered us when visiting Carnegie Hill, have become long-distance regulars, preferring our personal service to the anonymity of the Internet and secure in the knowledge that their requests will receive the closest possible attention.

Our monthly email newsletter includes brief descriptions of our favorite new fiction and nonfiction titles. We also have a monthly email Calendar of Events with the dates and descriptions of scheduled author readings and signings that primarily feature first-time local writers, who enjoy the opportunity to celebrate their publishing success with family and friends in a cozy, personal environment. Readings are followed by a festive wine-and-cheese reception.

We celebrate the year with an Open House Christmas Eve Party and welcome the entire neighborhood. Champagne flows freely and home-made cookies are devoured by all, while our special guest of honor, Santa Claus, makes the rounds.

The Corner Bookstore offers the pleasure, increasingly rare, of a small intimate shop stocked with quality literature and staffed by friendly, professional book people. Starting the bookstore was a challenge, maintaining it was an effort, but watching it succeed has been a joy. We invite you to come in and browse, on this website or—preferably—in person.
