SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of The Mother Court with James D. Zirin
DESCRIPTION:This is the first book to chronicle the history of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York\, the most influential District court in the United States\, from the perspective of a practicing attorney who has argued many cases before some of its most esteemed judges. \nIt gives first-hand insight into the evolution of our justice system—where it has been\, where it is now and where it is going. It provides an anatomy of what a trial is all about in an American courtroom\, featuring the most famous trials of the period in the greatest court in the nation. It gives the reader a taste of what the storied judges of the period— Weinfeld\, Murphy\, Mansfield\, Tyler\, Motley and Palmieri\, to name a few—were all about\, how they thought\, how they judged\, and why they were the worthy keepers of our sacred right to justice\, as well as the historical traditions of the Court. \n

And she misses Sadie.  Then Sadie tells Colette that she needs her old friend to join her on a family vacation to the Greek Islands\, one that leaves in only a few days\, and Colette is shocked to hear their old magic word: need. And she finds herself agreeing. Colette tries to relax and enjoy her Grecian surroundings but it’s not easy to go on vacation with the person who hurt you most in the world. It’s a summer full of surprises\, but that just might be what Colette needs.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Papa is a Poet with Natalie Bober
DESCRIPTION:When Robert Frost was a child\, his family thought he would grow up to be a baseball player. Instead\, he became a poet. His life on a farm in New Hampshire inspired him to write “poetry that talked\,” and today he is famous for his vivid descriptions of the rural life he loved so much. There was a time\, though\, when Frost had to struggle to get his poetry published. Told from the point of view of Lesley\, Robert Frost’s oldest daughter\, this is the story of how a lover of language found his voice.

SUMMARY:Ari Goldman reads from The Late Starters Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:If you thought a fiddler on a roof was in a precarious position\, imagine what happens when a middle-aged professor with a bad back takes up the cello. Ari Goldman hasn’t played in twenty-five years\, but he’s decided to give the cello one last chance. First he secures a seat in his eleven-year-old son’s youth orchestra\, and then he’s ready for the big time: the Late Starters Orchestra of New York City—a bona fide amateur string orchestra for beginning or recently returning adult players. \nWe accompany Goldman to LSO rehearsals (their motto is “If you think you can play\, you can”) and sit in on his son’s Suzuki lessons (where we find out that children do indeed learn differently from adults). And we wonder whether Goldman will be good enough to perform at his next birthday party. Coming to the rescue is the ghost of Goldman’s very first cello teacher\, Mr. J\, who continues to inspire and guide him—about music and more—through this enchanting midlife journey.

SUMMARY:Kate White reads from Eyes on You
DESCRIPTION:From New York Times bestselling author Kate White comes a riveting psychological suspense in which a media star must battle a malevolent enemy who may be disturbingly close to her. After losing her on-air job two years ago\, television host Robin Trainer has fought her way back and now she’s hotter than ever. With her new show climbing in the ratings and her first book a bestseller\, she’s being dubbed a media double threat. But suddenly\, things begin to go wrong. Small incidents at first: a nasty note left in her purse; her photo shredded. But the obnoxious quickly becomes threatening when the foundation the makeup artist uses burns Robin’s face. It wasn’t an accident—someone had deliberately doctored with the product. An adversary with a dark agenda wants to hurt Robin\, and the clues point to someone she works with every day. While she frantically tries to put the pieces together and unmask this hidden foe\, it becomes terrifyingly clear that the person responsible isn’t going to stop until Robin loses everything that matters to her . . . including her life.

SUMMARY:Chris Beha reads from his latest Arts and Entertainments
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Beha delivers a cutting send-up of our cultural obsession with celebrity—a deliciously witty\, and ultimately tender\, novel about the absurdity of fame and the complexity of love sure to appeal to fans of Maria Semple and Jess Walter. \nA sharp-edged satire with heart\, Arts & Entertainments is the story of Handsome Eddie Hartley who\, at thirty-three\, has forgone dreams of an acting career for the reality of life as a drama teacher at a boys’ prep school. But when Eddie and his wife\, Susan\, discover they cannot have children\, it is one disappointment too many. Weighted down with debt\, his wife’s mounting unhappiness\, and his own deepening sense of failure\, Eddie is confronted with an alluring solution when an old friend-turned-web-impresario suggests Eddie sell a sex tape he made with an ex-girlfriend\, now a wildly popular television star. Overcoming his initial moral qualms\, Eddie figures that in an era when any publicity is good publicity\, the tape won’t cause any harm—a decision that will have disastrous consequences and propel him straight into the glaring spotlight he once thought he craved. A hilariously biting and incisive take-down of our culture’s monstrous obsession with fame\, Arts & Entertainments is also a poignant and humane portrait of a young man’s belated coming-of-age\, the complications of love\, and the surprising ways in which the most meaningful lives often turn out to be the ones we least expected to lead.

SUMMARY:Deborah Halber discusses her debut The Skeleton Crew
DESCRIPTION:Solving cold cases from the comfort of your living room…The Skeleton Crew provides an entree into the gritty and tumultuous world of Sherlock Holmes–wannabes who race to beat out law enforcement—and one another—at matching missing persons with unidentified remains. In America today\, upwards of forty thousand people are dead and unaccounted for. These murder\, suicide\, and accident victims\, separated from their names\, are being adopted by the bizarre online world of amateur sleuths. \nIt’s DIY CSI. \nThe web sleuths pore over facial reconstructions (a sort of Facebook for the dead) and other online clues as they vie to solve cold cases and tally up personal scorecards of dead bodies. The Skeleton Crew delves into the macabre underside of the Internet\, the fleeting nature of identity\, and how even the most ordinary citizen with a laptop and a knack for puzzles can reinvent herself as a web sleuth. \n\nJoin author Deborah Halber and former NYPD detective Joe Giacalone http://joegiacalone.net/ at a conversation about how amateur sleuths using the Internet are solving cold cases involving unidentified remains at the official NYC launch of THE SKELETON CREW: How Amateur Sleuths Are Solving America’s Coldest Cases.

SUMMARY:NYC Launch of Landslide with author Jonathan Darman
DESCRIPTION:In this riveting work of narrative nonfiction\, Jonathan Darman tells the story of two giants of American politics\, Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan\, and shows how\, from 1963 to 1966\, these two men—the same age\, and driven by the same heroic ambitions—changed American politics forever. The liberal and the conservative. The deal-making arm twister and the cool communicator. The Texas rancher and the Hollywood star. Opposites in politics and style\, Johnson and Reagan shared a defining impulse: to set forth a grand story of America\, a story in which he could be the hero. In the tumultuous days after the Kennedy assassination\, Johnson and Reagan each\, in turn\, seized the chance to offer the country a new vision for the future. Bringing to life their vivid personalities and the anxious mood of America in a radically transformative time\, Darman shows how\, in promising the impossible\, Johnson and Reagan jointly dismantled the long American tradition of consensus politics and ushered in a new era of fracture. History comes to life in Darman’s vivid\, fly-on-the wall storytelling. Even as Johnson publicly revels in his triumphs\, we see him grow obsessed with dark forces he believes are out to destroy him\, while his wife\, Lady Bird\, urges her husband to put aside his paranoia and see the world as it really is. And as the war in Vietnam threatens to overtake his presidency\, we witness Johnson desperately struggling to compensate with ever more extravagant promises for his Great Society. On the other side of the country\, Ronald Reagan\, a fading actor years removed from his Hollywood glory\, gradually turns toward a new career in California politics. We watch him delivering speeches to crowds who are desperate for a new leader. And we see him wielding his well-honed instinct for timing\, waiting for Johnson’s majestic promises to prove empty before he steps back into the spotlight\, on his long journey toward the presidency. From Johnson’s election in 1964\, the greatest popular-vote landslide in American history\, to the pivotal 1966 midterms\, when Reagan burst forth onto the national stage\, Landslide brings alive a country transformed—by riots\, protests\, the rise of television\, the shattering of consensus—and the two towering personalities whose choices in those moments would reverberate through the country for decades to come.

SUMMARY:Geralyn Lucas discusses her new book Then Came Life with Delia Ephron
DESCRIPTION:  \nOne mastectomy\, two C-sections\, three pant’s sizes\, and lots of red lipstick later\, Geralyn Lucas is dealing with the same issues as other women her age. Her miracle babies have grown into a typical tween with a fierce eye-roll for her mom’s failings and a tornado of a little boy who won’t play by his preschool’s rules. Her storybook romance with her husband has spiraled into couples therapy and her perfect-if-demanding corporate job as a TV producer has abandoned her for L.A. When she looks in the mirror at her hard-won wrinkles\, all she wants is . . . Botox.  Celebrating her sweet sixteen cancerversary she’s thankful for her second chance and ready to be daring—but can she survive life’s new ups and downs with the same courage she’s always had? With an infectiously hilarious voice and a true sense of empowerment\, Geralyn harnesses her fighting spirit to live life loudly and lustily\, and to grab on to all the moments that might never have happened. Knowing she can only pedal forward\, she mines every day for boldness\, joy\, and gratitude\, and eventually falls in love with life again. Then Came Life is not just for cancer survivors; it’s for life survivors—a call to rediscover the resilience and optimism it takes to reinvent yourself at any age.

SUMMARY:NYC Launch of Older and Wiser with author Dag Ahlander
DESCRIPTION:Older and Wiser! is the inspiring new sequel to Older and Happier! \, Dag Sebastian Ahlander’s joyful guide to turning retirement into a time of self-exploration. For many men\, the years after sixty-five become the best of their lives—and with good reason. The office is left behind\, the children have grown up\, and you’re healthy\, alert\, and free to do what you want. Still\, as with any big life change\, you may be looking for some words of advice and hope. Older and Wiser! reflects on the big things in life and the little ones\, and contains practical suggestions as well as reflections on aging from the world’s greatest philosophers\, writers\, and thinkers. With thoughts like “You’re too old to die young\,” “You’ve retired from your job\, not from life\,” and “Be careful when you spend more time at the pharmacy than at the wine store\,” Mr. Ahlander guides older gentlemen along the golden years of retirement. Baby boomers are again defining a new age group\, just as they once invented the modern understanding of the teenager. Now\, they’re proving to the world that old age will have to wait. This is your time now—to accomplish what you’ve always dreamed of\, to do the things you like best. Live as you want to be remembered\, and enjoy the journey.

SUMMARY:NYC Launch of I Stand Corrected with Eden Collinsworth
DESCRIPTION:A fascinating fusion of memoir\, manners\, and cultural history from a successful businesswoman well versed in the unique challenges of working in contemporary China. \nDuring the course of a career that has\, quite literarily\, moved her around the world\, no country has fascinated Eden Collinsworth more than China\, where she has borne witness to its profound transformation. After numerous experiences there that might best be called “unusual” by Western standards\, she concluded that despite China’s growing status as a world economy\, businessmen in mainland China were fundamentally uncomfortable in the company of their Western counterparts. This realization spawned an idea to work collaboratively with a major Chinese publisher on a Western etiquette guide\, which went on to became a bestseller and prompted a branch of China’s Ministry of Education to suggest that she create a curriculum for the school system. In I Stand Corrected\, Collinsworth tells the entertaining and insightful story of the year she spent living among the Chinese while writing a book featuring advice on such topics as the non-negotiable issue of personal hygiene\, the rules of the handshake\, and making sense of foreigners. Scrutinizing the kind of etiquette that has guided her own business career\, one which has unfolded in predominately male company\, Collinsworth creates a counterpart that explains Chinese practices and reveals much about our own Western culture. At the same time\, I Stand Corrected is a wry but self-effacing reflection on the peripatetic career she led while single-handedly raising her son\, and here she details the often madcap attempts to strike a balance that was right for them both.

SUMMARY:Molly Peacock and Amy Clark read from and discuss their new chapbook A Turn Around the Mansion Grounds: Poems in Conversation & a Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Molly Peacock writes\, “Tucked inside the verb ‘converse’ is ‘verse\,’ of course. Conversari\, the Latin root\, means ‘to turn about with.’ The sense of lines walking and turning in a poem echoes the idea of walking and talking together.” In A Turn Around the Mansion Grounds\, Molly Peacock and Amy M. Clark present sixteen paired poems followed by a conversation about the poems\, the collaboration\, and the craft of poetry. The book is third in Slapering Hol Press’s series of limited-edition collaborative chapbooks featuring the work of an established woman poet alongside an emerging woman poet who was mentored by the former. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCover art by Kara Kosaka

This illicit group tirelessly digs tunnels in the hope of one day breaking through to the outside. But who are the Crabs\, and can they be trusted? Elgin’s mother\, Ellen\, is worried sick about her son. The ruthless school principal\, Mr. Orion\, warns her that Elgin is in big trouble and blackmails her for sexual favors. Together they go underground to search for the boy. Meanwhile\, agents of the IVT (Institute for Vertical Thinking) are also hot on his trail\, and the Crabs are feeling the heat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCover Design by Harold Wortsman

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Fifty Shrinks with author Sebastian Zimermann
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn his groundbreaking new book\, Fifty Shrinks\, psychiatrist and photographer Sebastian Zimmermann presents a fascinating\, first of its kind\, photographic survey of the current field of psychiatry and psychology through penetrating portraits of fifty therapists all taken in the most sacred of places – the private office where they see their patients. Ranging from luminaries to newly minted analysts\, Zimmermann’s subjects hail from widely different orientations that collectively reveal the diversity of approaches to therapeutic practice today. \nZimmermann’s photographs in Fifty Shrinks capture the feeling of the rooms in which a powerful process occurs; and through the interviews we begin to understand why the room looks the way it does. It is a glimpse into both the private spaces we rarely see and the minds of the healers who work there. Fifty Shrinks takes one on a profound journey that inspires belief in the possibility for positive change in human behavior and understanding.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the Publication of Nicholas Nixon's The Brown Sisters with MoMA curator Sarah Meister
DESCRIPTION:In August 1974\, Nick Nixon made a photograph of his wife\, Bebe\, and her three sisters. He wasn’t pleased with the result and discarded the negative. In July 1975 he made one that seemed promising enough to keep. At the time\, the Brown sisters were 15 (Mimi)\, 21 (Laurie)\, 23 (Heather)\, and 25 (Bebe). The following June\, Laurie Brown graduated from college\, and Nick made another picture of the four sisters. It was after this second successful picture that the group agreed to gather annually for a portrait\, and settled on the series’ two constants: the sisters would always appear in the same order—from left to right\, Heather\, Mimi\, Bebe\, and Laurie—and they would jointly agree on a single image to represent a given year. Also significant\, and unchanging\, is the fact that each portrait is made with an 8 x 10″ view camera on a tripod and is captured on a black-and-white film negative. This book celebrates the 40th anniversary of the series\, featuring luminous tri-tone reproductions of all 40 portraits.

SUMMARY:Paul Strohm reads from his latest Chaucer's Tale: 1386 and the Road to Canterbury
DESCRIPTION:A lively microbiography of Chaucer that tells the story of the tumultuous year that led to the creation of The Canterbury Tales \nIn 1386\, Geoffrey Chaucer endured his worst year\, but began his best poem. The father of English literature did not enjoy in his lifetime the literary celebrity that he has today—far from it. The middle-aged Chaucer was living in London\, working as a midlevel bureaucrat and sometime poet\, until a personal and professional crisis set him down the road leading to The Canterbury Tales. In the politically and economically fraught London of the late fourteenth century\, Chaucer was swept up against his will in a series of disastrous events that would ultimately leave him jobless\, homeless\, separated from his wife\, exiled from his city\, and isolated in the countryside of Kent—with no more audience to hear the poetry he labored over. At the loneliest time of his life\, Chaucer made the revolutionary decision to keep writing\, and to write for a national audience\, for posterity\, and for fame. Brought expertly to life by Paul Strohm\, this is the eye-opening story of the birth one of the most celebrated literary creations of the English language.

SUMMARY:Nicholas Carlson reads from his debut book Marissa Mayer and the Fight to Save Yahoo!
DESCRIPTION:When Yahoo hired star Google executive Marissa Mayer to be its CEO in 2012 employees rejoiced. They put posters on the walls throughout Yahoo’s California’s headquarters. On them\, there was Mayer’s face and one word: HOPE. But just more than a year later–on November 4\, 2013–Mayer sat in front those same employees in a huge cafeteria on Yahoo’s campus and took the beating of her life. Her hair wet\, and her tone defensive\, Mayer read and answered a series of employee-posed questions challenging the basic elements of her plan. There was anger in the room – and behind it\, a question: Was Mayer actually going to be able to do this thing? Nicholas Carlson’s fast-paced narrative is the inside story of how Yahoo got into such awful shape in the first place\, Mayer’s controversial rise at Google\, and her desperate fight to save an Internet icon. \nNicholas Carlson is Business Insider’s chief correspondent. His investigative reporting re-wrote the histories of Facebook\, Twitter\, and Groupon. His coverage of Yahoo won Digiday’s award for “Best Editorial Achievement” of the year. Carlson is a frequent guest on CNBC and contributes to the Bloomberg biography series\, Game Changers.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom with Lynda Blackmon Lowery\, Elspeth Leacock\, and Susan Buckley
DESCRIPTION:As the youngest marcher in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery\, Alabama\, Lynda Blackmon Lowery proved that young adults can be heroes. Jailed eleven times before her fifteenth birthday\, Lowery fought alongside Martin Luther King\, Jr. for the rights of African-Americans. In this memoir\, she shows today’s young readers what it means to fight nonviolently (even when the police are using violence\, as in the Bloody Sunday protest) and how it felt to be part of changing American history. \nStraightforward and inspiring\, this beautifully illustrated memoir brings readers into the middle of the Civil Rights Movement\, complementing Common Core classroom learning and bringing history alive for young readers. \n

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of The Crazy Thing with Carl Lehmann-Haupt
DESCRIPTION:The Crazy Thing tries to respond to this endless question. It is a love story entwined with a philosophic quest. Beginning from the question about dying it goes on to explore some ways in which it might be possible to begin over again\, and  perhaps still learn how to live ‘somewhere near the end.’ The Crazy Thing is a memoir with three themes: It tells the story of the author’s long love affair with the poet\, Celestine Frost; the drama of his enigmatic calling as an artist\, writer and thinker; and his lifelong search for the incalculable limits of the self. The Crazy Thing is a work in progress\, whose outcome is yet to be known. This first small volume will be followed by six more. It contains an invitation to the reader to post their questions\, comments and refutations regarding the book’s conclusions on a website — thecrazything.net. The author will take into account the most pertinent of those challenges to his understanding as he composes the subsequent installments. In the end\, the book will be a work of collaboration between the author and the community it creates. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lili Anolik launches her debut novel Dark Rooms
DESCRIPTION:The Secret History meets Sharp Objects in this stunning debut about murder and glamour set in the ambiguous and claustrophobic world of an exclusive New England prep school. \nDeath sets the plot in motion: the murder of Nica Baker\, beautiful\, wild\, enigmatic\, and only sixteen. The crime is solved\, and quickly—a lonely classmate\, unrequited love\, a suicide note confession—but memory and instinct won’t allow Nica’s older sister\, Grace\, to accept the case as closed. \nDropping out of college and living at home\, working at the moneyed and progressive private high school in Hartford\, Connecticut\, from which she recently graduated\, Grace becomes increasingly obsessed with identifying and punishing the real killer. \nCompulsively readable\, Lili Anolik’s debut novel combines the verbal dexterity of Marisha Pessl’s Special Topic in Calamity Physics and the haunting atmospherics and hairpin plot twists of Megan Abbott’s Dare Me.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the NYC launch of The Fifth Gospel with author Ian Caldwell
DESCRIPTION:In Ian Caldwell’s follow-up to his international sensation The Rule of Four\, a lost gospel\, a contentious relic\, and a dying pope’s final wish converge to send two brothers—both Vatican priests—on an intellectual quest to untangle Christianity’s greatest historical mystery. \nTen years ago\, Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason’s The Rule of Four became a literary phenomenon that earned comparisons to Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose and Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. Hailed as “ingenious…profoundly erudite” (The New York Times)\, “compulsively readable” (People)\, and “an exceptional piece of scholarship” (San Francisco Chronicle)\, it spent forty-nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list\, sold nearly two million copies in North America\, and was translated into thirty-five languages around the world. SUMMARY:James Grissom reads from his debut Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary book; one that almost magically makes clear how Tennessee Williams wrote; how he came to his visions of Amanda Wingfield\, his Blanche DuBois\, Stella Kowalski\, Alma Winemiller\, Lady Torrance\, and the other characters of his plays that transformed the American theater of the mid-twentieth century; a book that does\, from the inside\, the almost impossible—revealing the heart and soul of artistic inspiration and the unwitting collaboration between playwright and actress\, playwright and director. \nAt a moment in the life of Tennessee Williams when he felt he had been relegated to a “lower artery of the theatrical heart\,” when critics were proclaiming that his work had been overrated\, he summoned to New Orleans a hopeful twenty-year-old writer\, James Grissom\, who had written an unsolicited letter to the great playwright asking for advice. After a long\, intense conversation\, Williams sent Grissom on a journey on the playwright’s behalf to find out if he\, Tennessee Williams\, or his work\, had mattered to those who had so deeply mattered to him\, those who had led him to what he called the blank page\, “the pale judgment.” \nAmong the more than seventy giants of American theater and film Grissom sought out\, chief among them the women who came to Williams out of the fog: Lillian Gish\, Maureen Stapleton\, Jessica Tandy\, Kim Stanley \, Bette Davis\, Katharine Hepburn\, Jo Van Fleet\, Rosemary Harris\, Eva Le Gallienne\, Julie Harris\, and Geraldine Page.
