SUMMARY:Please join us for the launch of Botanical Shakespeare with author Gerit Quealy
DESCRIPTION:A captivating\, beautifully illustrated\, one-of-a-kind color compendium of the flowers\, fruits\, herbs\, trees\, seeds\, and grasses cited in the works of the world’s greatest playwright\, William Shakespeare\, accompanied by their companion quotes from all of his plays and poems. With a foreword by Dame Helen Mirren—the first foreword she has ever contributed. \nIn this striking compilation\, Shakespeare historian Gerit Quealy and respected Japanese artist Sumié Hasegawa combine their knowledge and skill in this first and only book that examines every plant that appears in the works of Shakespeare. \nBotanical Shakespeare opens with a brief look at the Bard’s relationship to the plants mentioned in his works—a diversity that illuminates his knowledge of the science of botany\, as well as the colloquy\, revealing his unmatched skill for creating metaphorical connections and interweaving substantive philosophy. At the heart of the book are “portraits” of the over 170 flowers\, fruits\, grains\, grasses\, trees\, herbs\, seeds and vegetables that Shakespeare mentions in his plays and poems. Botanical Shakespeare features a gorgeous color illustration of each\, giving a “face” to the name\, alongside the specific text in which it appears and the character(s) who utter the lines in which it is mentioned. \nThis fascinating visual compendium also includes a dictionary describing each plant—such as Eglantine\, a wild rose with a slight prickle\, cherished for its singular scent\, superior to any other rose; and the difference between apples and apple-john—along with indices listing the botanical by play/poem\, by character\, and genus for easy reference\, ideal for gardeners and thoughtful birthday gift-giving. \nThis breathtaking\, incomparable collection of exquisite artwork and companion quotes offers unique depth and insight into Shakespeare and his timeless work through the unusual perspective of the plants themselves.

SUMMARY:Please join us to celebrate the publication of Golden Legacy with Leonard S. Marcus
DESCRIPTION:Eminent children’s historian Leonard Marcus’ Golden Legacy chronicles the fascinating story of the creation\, marketing\, and worldwide impact of Little Golden Books\, the most popular children’s books of all time. Launched during the dark days of WWII\, Golden Books such as The Poky Little Puppy were an instant sensation. Hallmarked by their superlative quality yet affordable\, they changed the cultural landscape and mirrored our changing postwar culture: the powerful influence of television\, the post-Sputnik renaissance in American science education\, and the birth of the civil rights movement. Lavishly illustrated with the iconic Golden Book covers and colorful artwork  generations of children have pored over\, Golden Legacy is a compelling tale of mavericks\, innovators\, and renowned authors and illustrators. . . a stirring celebration of the humble books in which we scrawled our names\, with the cardboard cover and the shiny gold-foil spine.

SUMMARY:Edward Sorel launches Mary Astor's Purple Diary
DESCRIPTION:In a hilarious send-up of sex\, scandal\, and the Golden Age of Hollywood\, legendary cartoonist Edward Sorel brings us a story (literally) ripped from the headlines of a bygone era. In 1965\, a young\, up-and-coming illustrator by the name of Edward Sorel was living in a $97-a-month railroad flat on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Resolved to fix up the place\, Sorel began pulling up the linoleum on his kitchen floor\, tearing away layer after layer until he discovered a hidden treasure: issues of the New York Daily News and Daily Mirror from 1936\, each ablaze with a scandalous child custody trial taking place in Hollywood and starring the actress Mary Astor. Mary Astor’s Purple Diary narrates and illustrates the travails of the Oscar-winning actress alongside Sorel’s own personal story of discovering an unlikely muse. Throughout\, we get his wry take on all the juicy details of this particular slice of Hollywood Babylon\, including Mary’s life as a child star—her career in silent films began at age fourteen—presided over by her tyrannical father\, Otto\, who “managed” her full-time and treated his daughter like an ATM machine.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Robin Newman's latest Hildie Bitterpickles Needs Her Sleep
DESCRIPTION:A redheaded young witch named Hildie can’t get to sleep after a giant moves in next door with a “noisy beanstalk elevator” that goes “clangity\, clank\, clunk all night long.” Then an elderly woman with a “gazillion” noisy children shows up (their home is part Converse sneaker\, part retro mobile home)\, and a wolf huffs\, puffs\, and blows the roof off Hildie’s house. \nThis is an exceptionally strong debut for Chris Ewald whose gauzy\, caricatured images meld playful modern details with familiar storybook figures: readers will have fun spotting cameos by Humpty Dumpty\, Little Miss Muffet\, and more.

SUMMARY:Please join us to celebrate the publication of Wild By Design with Margie Ruddick
DESCRIPTION:Can nature—in all its unruly wildness—be an integral part of creative landscape design? In her beautifully illustrated book\, Wild by Design\, award-winning designer Margie Ruddick urges designers to look beyond the rules often imposed by both landscaping convention and sustainability checklists. Instead\, she offers a set of principles for a more creative and intuitive approach that challenges the entrenched belief that natural processes cannot complement high-level landscape design. Wild by Design defines and explains the five fundamental strategies Ruddick employs to give life\, beauty\, and meaning to landscapes: Reinvention\, Restoration\, Conservation\, Regeneration\, and Expression. Drawing on her own projects–from New York City’s Queens Plaza\, formerly a concrete jungle of traffic\, to a desertscape backyard in Baja\, California\, to the Living Water Park in Chengdu\, China–she offers guidance on creating beautiful\, healthy landscapes that successfully reconnect people with larger natural systems.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Fine\, Fine\, Fine\, Fine\, Fine with author Diane Williams
DESCRIPTION:The very short stories of Diane Williams have been aptly called “folk tales that hammer like a nail gun\,” and these 40 new ones are sharper than ever. They are unsettling\, yes\, frequently revelatory\, and more often than not downright funny. \nNot a single moment here is what you might expect. While there is immense pleasure to be found in Williams’s spot-on observations about how we behave in our highest and lowest moments\, the heart of the drama beats in the language of American short fiction’s grand master\, whose originality\, precision\, and power bring the familiar into startling and enchanted relief.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of The Crazy Thing with Carl Lehmann-Haupt
DESCRIPTION:The Crazy Thing tries to respond to this endless question. It is a love story entwined with a philosophic quest. Beginning from the question about dying it goes on to explore some ways in which it might be possible to begin over again\, and  perhaps still learn how to live ‘somewhere near the end.’ The Crazy Thing is a memoir with three themes: It tells the story of the author’s long love affair with the poet\, Celestine Frost; the drama of his enigmatic calling as an artist\, writer and thinker; and his lifelong search for the incalculable limits of the self. The Crazy Thing is a work in progress\, whose outcome is yet to be known. This first small volume will be followed by six more. It contains an invitation to the reader to post their questions\, comments and refutations regarding the book’s conclusions on a website — thecrazything.net. The author will take into account the most pertinent of those challenges to his understanding as he composes the subsequent installments. In the end\, the book will be a work of collaboration between the author and the community it creates. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom with Lynda Blackmon Lowery\, Elspeth Leacock\, and Susan Buckley
DESCRIPTION:As the youngest marcher in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery\, Alabama\, Lynda Blackmon Lowery proved that young adults can be heroes. Jailed eleven times before her fifteenth birthday\, Lowery fought alongside Martin Luther King\, Jr. for the rights of African-Americans. In this memoir\, she shows today’s young readers what it means to fight nonviolently (even when the police are using violence\, as in the Bloody Sunday protest) and how it felt to be part of changing American history. \nStraightforward and inspiring\, this beautifully illustrated memoir brings readers into the middle of the Civil Rights Movement\, complementing Common Core classroom learning and bringing history alive for young readers. \n

DESCRIPTION:New York is a city for lovers: In Love in New York guides the reader to the most romantic sights and destinations the city has to offer. Chapters follow on great date ideas\, including destination museums and unusual “dinner-and-a-movie/theater” combinations. For readers ready to commit\, the authors detail the best proposal spots; where to go ring shopping; the coolest places to register for gifts; and information about the legal requirements for marrying in the city (gay and straight)\, including a rundown on the classic City Hall wedding—with the best places to buy flowers and to celebrate afterwards\, naturally. There are also ideas for planning honeymoons and anniversaries. Throughout\, sidebars offer romantic options such as wonderful bars with fireplaces\, the prettiest park benches\, great New York literary and film affairs to inspire your visit\, and romantic day trips within and near the five boroughs. SUMMARY:Celebrate the Publication of Nicholas Nixon's The Brown Sisters with MoMA curator Sarah Meister
DESCRIPTION:In August 1974\, Nick Nixon made a photograph of his wife\, Bebe\, and her three sisters. He wasn’t pleased with the result and discarded the negative. In July 1975 he made one that seemed promising enough to keep. At the time\, the Brown sisters were 15 (Mimi)\, 21 (Laurie)\, 23 (Heather)\, and 25 (Bebe). The following June\, Laurie Brown graduated from college\, and Nick made another picture of the four sisters. It was after this second successful picture that the group agreed to gather annually for a portrait\, and settled on the series’ two constants: the sisters would always appear in the same order—from left to right\, Heather\, Mimi\, Bebe\, and Laurie—and they would jointly agree on a single image to represent a given year. Also significant\, and unchanging\, is the fact that each portrait is made with an 8 x 10″ view camera on a tripod and is captured on a black-and-white film negative. This book celebrates the 40th anniversary of the series\, featuring luminous tri-tone reproductions of all 40 portraits.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Fifty Shrinks with author Sebastian Zimermann
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn his groundbreaking new book\, Fifty Shrinks\, psychiatrist and photographer Sebastian Zimmermann presents a fascinating\, first of its kind\, photographic survey of the current field of psychiatry and psychology through penetrating portraits of fifty therapists all taken in the most sacred of places – the private office where they see their patients. Ranging from luminaries to newly minted analysts\, Zimmermann’s subjects hail from widely different orientations that collectively reveal the diversity of approaches to therapeutic practice today. \nZimmermann’s photographs in Fifty Shrinks capture the feeling of the rooms in which a powerful process occurs; and through the interviews we begin to understand why the room looks the way it does. It is a glimpse into both the private spaces we rarely see and the minds of the healers who work there. Fifty Shrinks takes one on a profound journey that inspires belief in the possibility for positive change in human behavior and understanding.

SUMMARY:NYC Launch of Older and Wiser with author Dag Ahlander
DESCRIPTION:Older and Wiser! is the inspiring new sequel to Older and Happier! \, Dag Sebastian Ahlander’s joyful guide to turning retirement into a time of self-exploration. For many men\, the years after sixty-five become the best of their lives—and with good reason. The office is left behind\, the children have grown up\, and you’re healthy\, alert\, and free to do what you want. Still\, as with any big life change\, you may be looking for some words of advice and hope. Older and Wiser! reflects on the big things in life and the little ones\, and contains practical suggestions as well as reflections on aging from the world’s greatest philosophers\, writers\, and thinkers. With thoughts like “You’re too old to die young\,” “You’ve retired from your job\, not from life\,” and “Be careful when you spend more time at the pharmacy than at the wine store\,” Mr. Ahlander guides older gentlemen along the golden years of retirement. Baby boomers are again defining a new age group\, just as they once invented the modern understanding of the teenager. Now\, they’re proving to the world that old age will have to wait. This is your time now—to accomplish what you’ve always dreamed of\, to do the things you like best. Live as you want to be remembered\, and enjoy the journey.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Papa is a Poet with Natalie Bober
DESCRIPTION:When Robert Frost was a child\, his family thought he would grow up to be a baseball player. Instead\, he became a poet. His life on a farm in New Hampshire inspired him to write “poetry that talked\,” and today he is famous for his vivid descriptions of the rural life he loved so much. There was a time\, though\, when Frost had to struggle to get his poetry published. Told from the point of view of Lesley\, Robert Frost’s oldest daughter\, this is the story of how a lover of language found his voice.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the publication of Wendy Aronsson's debut Refeathering the Empty Nest
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This event was moved from April 16 to April 30. \nMany parents have demonstrated a desire to parent skillfully and artfully. They read the latest child development and parenting books\, configure their schedules to accommodate the social and educational lives of their children\, and focus like lasers on their childrens’ well-being. Many have made an enormous emotional and financial investment in raising their children. But children grow up\, they move out\, they create their own lives and their own homes. The role of the parent changes\, diminishes\, and evolves. \n\nThe life phase that begins in preparation for an “empty nest” and continues until parents re-feather the nest has no official name\, yet it represents a profound shift from the rigors of daily parenting to a period of self-reflection and reorientation. Here\, Wendy Aronsson centers on that experience\, capturing the realities of the emotions and life changes that come on gradually\, and sometimes proceed in fits and starts. \nRefeathering the Empty Nest is for any parent preparing for the departure from of home of their youngest child. It is for those who wish to move forward productively\, both in their new parenting role and in their roles as spouse\, employee\, friend\, neighbor\, and self. Using real stories throughout\, Aronsson shows how people have managed these changes\, how they’ve reignited the passion in their marriages or moved on from bad matches\, how they’ve rediscovered old interests and talents\, and how they’ve reinvented their relationships with their children as well. These stories provide hope and guidance to anyone whose nest is about to empty as well as those whose nests already are.
